Recommended Accommodation
If you’re traveling to Traunsee and the Langbathseen lakes from far away, or if you’re planning to spend several days here to discover all the beautiful lakes in Upper Austria, we recommend our favorite hotel in Ebensee, on the edge of Traunsee, from where you’ll have the mentioned approximately 15 minutes by car to Langbathseen. The accommodation has an excellent price/quality ratio and the hotel is run by a very nice family. We also recommend the local restaurant.

Route and Parking at Langbathseen
The ideal route for a trip to the Langbathseen lakes leads from South Bohemia through Linz around Lake Traunsee. The journey from České Budějovice will take you about 2.5 hours. Once you drive along the shore to the final town of Ebensee, you can turn off your navigation and follow the signs leading directly to Langbathseen.
From there, you won’t get lost. A narrow road along the river leads up to the lakes in the mountains, at the end of which awaits a comfortable and large parking lot with officially 200 parking spaces for cars plus about 2 spaces for disabled visitors.
UPDATE:
- A payment machine has now been installed in the parking lot.
- Just like at Offensee and Almsee, there’s now also a ban on paddleboards here!!

On weekends and holidays, expect that those who arrive late for a trip to the Langbathseen lakes will have to park along the road, even a kilometer from the parking lot. Don’t worry that you won’t find your quiet spot at the lakes. Most tourists usually concentrate at the beginning of Vorderer Langbathsee or you’ll encounter them here and there along the way. The parking lot also includes free public toilets.
Vorderer Langbathsee Lake
Vorderer Langbathsee spreads out before you right behind the parking lot. That’s why the trip to the Langbathseen lakes is the most popular destination in its first part for those who come here just for a picnic and swimming at the lake on hot summer days. Besides a nice pebble beach and pleasant water entry even for children, there’s also a popular restaurant next to the parking lot that provides lunches, snacks, and a large selection of drinks and other refreshments during good weather. You can also rest on the adjacent green meadow.

However, it would be a shame to stay only in the first part of Vorderer Langbathsee. The path around it will take you a maximum of one hour of pleasant walking on a paved (slightly gravelly) path without stops. In sunny weather, however, the turquoise surface of the lake may often tempt you to leave the path for the shore and enjoy the view for a while.
This circuit is suitable for almost anyone. Families with strollers and disabled people in sports wheelchairs won’t have problems here either. Just keep in mind that city wheels might struggle a bit here.

Hinterer Langbathsee Lake
Hinterer Langbathsee is approximately half the size of the lower Vorderer Langbathsee. In nice weather, the view and walk around it is a reward for all those who didn’t get lazy and didn’t stay only at the first lake. The entire route around both lakes is about 7 kilometers, and if you didn’t stop anywhere, the walk would take you a maximum of 2 hours.
Two paths lead from Vorderer Langbathsee. You can go up one way and return the other. The path is again paved and slightly gravelly. Although you’ll encounter families with strollers here, we recommend rather a baby carrier or sports stroller. Expect a path up a small hill. Otherwise, it’s a relatively easy pleasant walk for everyone.

You can walk around Hinterer Langbathsee itself in half an hour, and on a warm summer day we recommend rewarding yourself with swimming at one of the local natural beaches. Around the lake you’ll find many rest benches, but you can spread your picnic blanket practically anywhere. The sun sets behind the mountains here around 4 PM.
Be careful of leeches in the water. You shouldn’t be scared by the presence of snakes either – for example, you’ll encounter small grass snakes here quite often.

Vorderer Langbathsee is a popular spot for divers not only from Austria due to its excellent visibility even at depth. Where diving is suitable is indicated by a sign at the end of the parking lot before entering the lake.

In winter, Langbathseen is a popular skating rink. Under good conditions, an area for curling is also maintained on site. Entry onto the ice is strictly at your own risk. The restaurant is occasionally open on weekends during good weather throughout the year.
The route around the lakes is suitable for mountain and trekking bikes. If you’re staying near Traunsee, you can approach the trip to the mountain lakes Langbathseen as a full-day cycling trip. For those less fit who just want to enjoy the scenery, it’s ideal to get on bikes directly at the parking lot in front of Vorderer Langbathsee. The elevation gain of about 170 m is towards Hinterer Langbathsee. Around the first lake, you ride almost on flat ground. Both lakes can be cycled around completely.
High mountain hiking enthusiasts will find several viewpoints here, accessible via multi-hour tours. Always check the weather forecast and bring enough fluids, appropriate clothing and footwear, and snacks.
- A shorter hike with breathtaking views of Vorderer Langbathsee lake is from the Signalkogel viewpoint
- A challenging multi-hour hike awaits you from Hinterer Langbathsee (730 m) along the secured route – Ferata Schafluckensteig – to Brunnkogel (1708 m, viewpoint with cross).
