Even after the summer season at Tauplitzalm ends, lovers of mountain walks around Austrian lakes don’t need to despair. A winter vacation at Tauplitzalm is just as magical. And this time we exceptionally didn’t bring skis and snowboards with us, so we could experience firsthand that Tauplitzalm is a great place for winter walks too.

For our trip we chose the popular New Year period, so we can also evaluate how numerous lovers of winter fun manage to spread out in the mountain resort. With surprise and joy we found that despite clear weather and really a lot of tourists, a winter vacation at Tauplitzalm doesn’t lose any of its charm.

Getting there and Parking at Tauplitzalm in Winter

A winter vacation at Tauplitzalm offers three options for how you can get to the resort. The first is ideal for those vacationers who have booked accommodation directly in the village of Tauplitz, from where they can get to Tauplitzalm by local cable car. The second option is perfect for day trippers, as well as for those staying in one of the chalets or hotels directly at Tauplitzalm.

You can comfortably drive here by car at any time of year. Access via Alpenstrasse Tauplitz is operated by a private company and states that the road is supposedly accessible all year round, even during windy days when cable cars usually don’t operate (more information including current pricing can be found at alpenstrasse.at).

The third option is to wait for the bus operated by Alpenstrasse Tauplitz company, which will take you including equipment from the parking lot at the toll gate in Bad Mitterndorf up to Tauplitzalm. This option is ideal for example for those who are staying in this village.

Just like in summer, we pay the toll for the scenic drive on Alpenstrasse Tauplitz and head up to 1,600 meters above sea level by car. For a car with max 5 people we pay 14 euros/day.

In summer it’s no problem for us to park in the morning hours at the main parking lot. On New Year’s, however, a local worker stops us about 1.5 km below the resort. Everything is perfectly coordinated though, and after the boring drive on the road, we let ourselves be taken by the local minibus.

Winter Tauplitzalm

The winter resort Tauplitz (more information about the resort at DieTauplitz.com) is without exaggeration a “Winterland”. We dare say it’s one of those places where everyone will truly find something for themselves. If you can’t imagine winter without skis, you’ll be thrilled by kilometers of long and shorter slopes at all difficulty levels. Are you lovers of cross-country skiing?

Nothing could be easier than putting them on and exploring Tauplitzalm on kilometers of groomed trails. Are you just learning on cross-country skis or downhill skis? Take advantage of the cross-country circuit ideal for beginners, and for small children on skis you’ll appreciate the popular covered conveyor belt instead of a lift and the connecting pleasant slope.

Don’t enjoy any of the mentioned winter sports and wonder if a winter vacation at Tauplitzalm makes sense? Then you’ll be thrilled by the approximately 5-kilometer circuit of winter hiking through the resort. We set out to walk this circuit ourselves and due to the sunny weather we also went a bit further to Steirersee, and in the end our app showed a beautiful 10 kilometers, without us walking through forbidden cross-country or ski trails, or completely off marked paths. Some paths can be icy in winter, so don’t forget to wear quality boots for the trip.

Accommodation at Tauplitzalm

Accommodation directly at Tauplitzalm offers many advantages and only one disadvantage – unfortunately you can’t drive your own car to the hotel or chalets. You’ll have to park it at the main parking lot and from there be transported on a snow scooter with your luggage and equipment. However, this can also be considered a pleasant advantage and an experience you won’t have just anywhere. Use our proven accommodation tip directly at the slope at Hotel Hierzegger:

If you’re staying directly at Tauplitzalm, you just need to put on your skis after breakfast and ski down to the nearest lift.

Also keep in mind that walks outside marked trails are at your own risk. Are you heading here for a trip during snowy days? You won’t go wrong by packing snowshoes, which we would have also appreciated during our New Year’s walk.

Once you get hungry during your winter sports fun, you have countless options here for where to go for a tasty lunch or early dinner as the culmination of your trip. You can usually choose between traditional dishes, which include goulash or other soup, sausages, hams and cheese platters, and for sweet lovers there must be the popular yeast dumpling. Cheers!
