In all three villages, you can find accommodations that are reasonably priced even by the lake. However, if you want the best possible experience of staying at Wolfgangsee, it’s worth focusing mainly on places with their own pier, beach, or at least a direct lake view.
As for dietary restrictions in hotels, I personally travel with a gluten-free diet and can say that in Austrian hotels in recent years, the selection of gluten-free food has been no problem, including breakfast. In any case, if you book apartments just to be safe, I recommend visiting local supermarkets; for example, Interspar and Hofer have a wide range of gluten-free products in Austria.
Wolfgangsee and trips
Lake Wolfgangsee lies on the border of the federal states of Salzburg and Upper Austria and is one of the cleanest and warmest Alpine lakes in the Salzkammergut region. It has an area of approximately 13 km², a maximum depth of 114 meters, and in the summer months, the water commonly warms up to 22–24 °C, making it a popular spot for swimming and water sports.
The well-known resorts of St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut, St. Gilgen, and Strobl offer good facilities for hiking and cycling. A prominent landmark is Mount Schafberg (1,783 m), which we recommend for an excursion. A historic cog railway leads to the top, offering panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding Alpine peaks. Those who are physically fit can also head up on foot, or perhaps just hike from the halfway point.
Trip to Salzburg
Boat Trip on the Lake
Another popular trip here is a boat ride on the lake. Whichever accommodation at Wolfgangsee you choose, the local boats, which run at regular intervals, will conveniently connect you with the other villages. Wolfgangsee is also easily accessible from Salzburg (approx. 40 km) and is suitable for both short trips and longer stays.
Walk around Bürglestein
If you want to go for a nice walk around the lake, we recommend our tip for a trip from Strobl around Bürglestein, where you can walk all the way to St. Wolfgang and return by boat.
Trip to Lake Fuschlsee
A trip to the nearby Lake Fuschlsee is also beautiful and can be done as a day trip. You can walk all the way around the lake and also go for a swim on hot days. I recommend visiting Fuschl am See and, on the other side, Fuschl Castle. You can take a local boat from one end to the other.
