We consider Faaker See one of the most beautiful lakes in Carinthia. In our opinion, it’s ideal for those who want to enjoy swimming in turquoise water, mountain views, calmer water sports, and trips without long travel times during their holiday. It’s located in the Villach – Faaker See – Ossiacher See region, and its biggest draws are the southern Carinthian atmosphere and panoramic views of the Mittagskogel mountain in the Karawanks.

We personally highlight the high water clarity and the fact that you can enjoy water activities like swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, or sailing here. There are several rental shops on-site, but feel free to pack your own paddleboards or inflatable kayaks, just like we do.

Summer holiday at Faaker See

Faaker See is mainly suitable for travelers who don’t want to just lie on one beach all week. The water is pleasantly warm in summer; the official Carinthian website reports temperatures up to 24°C. The depth is about 30 meters. The lake has an island in the middle that divides the water surface into two parts, where you’ll also find the famous Inselhotel.

Swimming is easiest at paid lidos and at accommodations with private lake access. The good news, however, is that there are also free access points to the water at Faaker See. We tried, for example, Siedlerstrand near Camping Arneitz, as well as the free access at the end of the peninsula on the western shore and Panorama Beach in Drobollach, which features a free, well-maintained area with a lawn, restaurant, children’s water access, a playground, and a long slide.

What to do at Faaker See in summer?

1. Swimming and beaches at Faaker See

Faaker See is primarily a lake suitable for swimming. Families will appreciate the well-kept lidos, shallow entries, and facilities. The more active among you will be thrilled by the clear water and the chance to swim with a view of the Karawanks. If you’re visiting during the high season, we recommend heading to the water earlier in the morning or choosing accommodation with its own lake access.

2. A paradise for paddleboards, kayaks, and sailing

Since there are no private motorboats on Faaker See, the lake feels calmer than some of the busier Carinthian lakes. In our opinion, it’s a great place for paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing, rowing, and sailing. You’ll also find rental shops and water sports schools here. Small boats can be rented at several locations around the lake, such as in Faak, Egg, and Drobollach.

3. Taborhöhe and the view of the turquoise lake

You’ll find one of the best views of Faaker See from Taborhöhe. The trip can be combined with a forest rope park, refreshments, and a short walk. For us, it’s the ideal first trip after arrival, as you can get a sense of the lake’s location, the island, and the mountain scenery from above.

4. Mittagskogel and hiking in the Karawanks

Mount Mittagskogel dominates the entire area. In our view, it’s one of the typical symbols of Faaker See. More experienced hikers can set off on more demanding mountain treks, while families will likely appreciate easier routes, Slow Trails, or walks towards Aichwaldsee. The area around Baumgartnerhof also offers beautiful views of the lake.

5. Cycling and the lake.bike Trailcenter

The area around Faaker See is also excellent for cyclists. More relaxed trips lead through the landscape around the lake and towards the Drau Cycle Path, while sportier tourists can head to the lake.bike Trailcenter Faaker See. The place is great for both beginners and more experienced bikers.

6. A trip to Villach

Villach is a great tip for an evening stroll if you’re looking for a good restaurant or something to do in bad weather. We consider Villach the center of the region, and a great trip tip to save is Kärnten Therme, a year-round wellness center with full facilities.

When traveling with a dog, you need to expect restrictions. To protect water quality, dogs should not swim in Faaker See. Recommended alternatives in the region include dog swimming in the Gail and Drau rivers. There is a swimming spot for dogs at Faaker See as well, but no one has officially confirmed it for us, so we don’t mention it here.

More trip tips around Faaker See

For a longer stay, we recommend adding Ossiacher See with the Gerlitzen Alpe, the Dobratsch Nature Park, or the city of Villach itself. You can also take a beautiful trip towards the tri-border of Austria, Italy, and Slovenia. The Villach – Faaker See – Ossiacher See region is interesting for its clean lakes, hiking, cycling, and trips in the Alps-Adriatic area.

Faaker See is therefore a great choice for a summer holiday in Carinthia if you’re looking for a smaller, beautifully colored lake with good infrastructure, but don’t want to give up on trips, mountains, cycling, and an active program. It’s best to plan at least 3 to 5 days here, or even a full week if you want to include Ossiacher See, Villach, and Dobratsch.
