Lake Lunzer See boasts perfect water quality and diverse opportunities for visitors of all ages practically all year round. The lake, which shares its name with the town of Lunz am See situated on its shores, is also the main cultural hub of the entire region.
While Lower Austria boasts famous promenades and popular cycling paths along the Danube and among vineyards, natural lakes with suitable swimming conditions are not abundant here. Lunzer See is thus the only natural lake in Lower Austria officially designated for swimming.

The Seebühne (Lake Stage) is an experience for visitors, organizers, and performers alike. During the day, the stage functions as a sunny sunbathing terrace or a swimming island. The pier is also used as a daily base for divers. In the evening, it transforms into a covered stage and auditorium, where you can enjoy the unforgettable atmosphere of many social events.
A holiday at Lunzer See offers perfect relaxation in nature. If you visit Lunz am See between May and June, you can also enjoy the blooming meadows full of white daffodils, which are so typical for this area. Thousands of daffodils transform the green meadows around the shores of the entire lake.

Trip Tip to 3 Lakes from Lunz Am See: Lunzer See, Mittersee, and Obersee
The town of Lunz am See should rather be called Lunz on the Lakes. A holiday at Lunzer See doesn’t just offer you a stay at one emerald lake, but at three. It’s no wonder that the tour around these three lakes in the Lunz am See area is known as the 3-lake walk.
A walk around the first lake, Lunzer See, will take you approximately 1.5 hours, covering about 4 kilometers with an elevation gain of 50 meters. It is easy and suitable for almost everyone. Not all paths are paved; with a stroller, you can go as far as the terrain allows. A moderately challenging trek also starts at Lunzer See, and the path to Mittersee is not difficult at all.

Mittersee, Lunz am See
You will reach the lake in approximately one hour; it is located at an altitude of 766 meters and is 333 meters long. The spring-fed Mittersee lake was formed by a landslide and is predominantly shallow. The deepest point in the lake is stated to be 3 meters. A strong current of spring water flows through the lake, and because the water does not warm up for too long, it maintains an almost year-round temperature of around 7 degrees Celsius.
A noticeably steeper ascent awaits you to Lake Obersee, reaching an altitude of 1,113 meters. As a reward, romantic views of the surrounding mountains await you. At the destination, nestled among rocky hills, a dark green lake awaits you, from whose waters an islet with a group of spruces rises.

Obersee, Lunz am See
The lake was formed by glacial erosion during the last ice age and is considered one of the cleanest mountain lakes in Austria. On the southern and western shores, you’ll find peat bogs and shifting moss carpets. If you dare to step on them at your own risk, you might experience the rare phenomenon of so-called “swinging grass”.
Among the plants, we can mention carnivorous plants like “sundews”. The lake is 797 meters long and 15 meters deep. In winter, it’s not uncommon for more than 3 meters of snow to fall here. This 3-lake trip will take you approximately 6 hours, and the total length is just under 19 kilometers. It is recommended to do the trek ideally from May to early October.

Visit the so-called Amon House, which was reconstructed according to the original project plans and is considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in Austria. The inscription above the stone entrance gate reveals the age of the original house: “Built by Martin Ofner, 1551” (translated into English). Currently, in the building, you will find, for example, a historical blacksmith museum, and the tourist information center for the area is also located here.

The small Maiszinken resort is particularly suitable for families with children and undemanding beginners. You will also find a children’s ski carpet here. As you have already read above, don’t forget to pack your ice skates in winter, and cross-country skiers will also enjoy their winter holiday at Lunzer See, as there are groomed cross-country trails here.
