We recommend this place mainly to those who want to combine a lakeside stay with mountain trips and nature outings. One day you can head to a nearby waterfall or go on a mountain hike, the next you can spend swimming in Attersee, and in the evenings enjoy the peace that (in our opinion) is an inherent part of the lake’s eastern shore.
Steinbach am Attersee is also designated as a Bergsteigerdorf, a mountaineering village focused on sustainable Alpine tourism. That’s also why it’s worth visiting not just in summer, but also in spring, autumn, or for a pleasant winter atmosphere.

1. Steinbach is a quieter part of Attersee
Attersee is one of the most beautiful lakes in Austria, and we’ve seen for ourselves many times that it can be very busy and popular in the summer. However, Steinbach am Attersee feels a bit calmer than some of the more famous spots in the north of the lake. You’ll find a village character here, enjoy the proximity to nature, and find a pleasant atmosphere even for a longer stay.
We recommend going here especially if you don’t just want a quick stop by the water, but are looking for a base for several days. Steinbach is also great for a varied holiday where you plan swimming one day, a trip to a waterfall the next, and maybe a mountain hike or a boat or bike ride around the lake the day after.
2. Solar Strandbad Steinbach: swimming for families and relaxing by the water
The main swimming spot in Steinbach am Attersee is the Solar Strandbad Steinbach in the Seefeld area. It’s a pleasant family lido by the lake with a large grassy area, a solar-heated pool, a children’s paddling pool, a slide, refreshments, and the chance to play beach volleyball.
For families with children, it’s one of the most practical spots in Steinbach. You have facilities, toilets, showers, cabins, and snack options, so you can easily spend the whole day here. Another advantage is the possibility of renting a paddleboard if you want to enjoy Attersee a bit more actively.
Our tip: In high season, check the current occupancy of the swimming areas at Attersee before visiting. At Solar Strandbad Steinbach, also keep in mind that neither grilling nor dogs are allowed.

3. Nixenfall: an easy trip to a waterfall
If you’re looking for a trip you can manage even with children, add Nixenfall to your itinerary. This approximately 50-meter-high waterfall is one of the prettiest natural destinations around Steinbach. The route is easy, well-marked, and leads through a pleasant landscape near Weißenbach, where you’ll also find several nice spots to cool off.

Along the way, children will enjoy interactive stops, the forest atmosphere, and the legend of the lake fairy associated with the waterfall. Part of the route is suitable for strollers, though the final section can be more challenging. Nixenfall is therefore an ideal tip for a half-day trip that you can combine with swimming in the lake or a stop nearby.

Our tip: Stop for a lunch of grilled fish on a stick on the way. You certainly won’t miss the advertisement for this bistro in Weissenbach, where they grill fresh trout. We paid just under 17 EUR for a fish in the spring, and it was delicious.

4. Höllengebirge and Mahdlgupf for more experienced hikers
Steinbach am Attersee lies below the Höllengebirge mountains, making it an excellent starting point for mountain hikes. The most famous destination for sporty visitors is Mahdlgupf and especially the Attersee Klettersteig Mahdlgupf.

Warning: This is not a regular tourist walk. The ferrata is demanding, suitable only for experienced climbers with appropriate equipment, a helmet, a via ferrata set, and good fitness. But if you’re among the more experienced ferrata lovers, you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of Attersee and the surrounding Salzkammergut. We haven’t done this ferrata personally; this tip comes from our friends who have been doing ferratas for years.
- For regular hikers, we recommend choosing simpler scenic routes instead.
5. Bergsteigerdorf: sustainable tourism
Steinbach am Attersee is designated as a Bergsteigerdorf. This means the village is committed to sustainable Alpine tourism, nature protection, and preserving the original character of the place. So don’t expect a destination built on big attractions and mass entertainment. You’ll like it here if you prefer peace, hiking, an authentic landscape, and a natural connection between the mountains and the lake.
That’s exactly why Steinbach am Attersee is also suitable for those who enjoy “slow travel.” Instead of a big program for every day, you can treat yourself to a morning walk, a view of the lake, swimming, a trip to the forest, sitting by the water, or evening stargazing. And of course, don’t forget to taste the local traditional food.
6. Attersee below the surface: diving at Schwarze Brücke
Attersee is also popular among divers, and near Steinbach, you’ll find the famous Schwarze Brücke diving entry point. This spot is mainly suitable for experienced divers, as rock formations and a steep wall that drops to a great depth await below the surface.
Even if you don’t dive, it’s still worth knowing that Attersee isn’t just beautiful to look at. The lake has clean water, an interesting underwater world, and has long been a sought-after location for water sports. For recreational visitors, however, it’s better to stick to swimming, paddleboarding, or boat trips.

7. Gustav Mahler, regional food, and peace even outside of summer
Steinbach am Attersee also has a cultural dimension. Gustav Mahler stayed here, and his legacy is still commemorated in the village. If you like a combination of nature and culture, Steinbach can be a pleasant addition to other places around Attersee known for artists and the summer stays of famous personalities.
During a longer stay, we also recommend trying the local gastronomy. In the Attersee area, you’ll often find fresh fish from the lake, regional products, and quiet establishments where you can enjoy a pleasant sit-down after a trip.
And even though most visitors come in the summer, Steinbach has its charm outside the main season too. In spring and autumn, it attracts hikers and cyclists with its calmer atmosphere; in winter, the surroundings are perfect for those looking for a quiet alternative to busy Alpine resorts. Nearby, you can visit the smaller Hochlecken ski area or enjoy sledding on the old Großalmstraße.
Our tip: We were last here in the spring for the car-free day, when the road around the lake is closed and accessible only to cyclists, runners, and walkers. I definitely recommend checking the schedule and taking part next year too.
Practical tips for a holiday in Steinbach am Attersee / How to get to Attersee
By car, Steinbach is most often reached via the A1 motorway. From Vienna and Linz via the Schörfling am Attersee exit and then along the B152 through Weyregg; from Salzburg via the Mondsee exit and then through Unterach and Weißenbach. Without a car, you can travel by train to Vöcklabruck or Attnang-Puchheim and continue by bus or taxi. An interesting option is also a combination of train, the Attergaubahn, and a boat across Attersee, but in that case, be sure to check the current connections in advance.
