You can consider a trip to Almsee Lake Filzmoos as a supplementary activity during a holiday in the Schladming – Dachstein area, or simply go for a day trip if you’re from the České Budějovice area, just like us.
Imagine an idyllic landscape, mountains covered in greenery, snow from autumn to spring, a beautiful lake with crystal clear water, and a picturesque village where the scent of local specialties welcomes you.
Almsee Lake Filzmoos
You can enjoy all this and much more on a summer trip to Filzmoos and Almsee Lake Filzmoos. This gem of the Austrian Alps is just over 300 km from České Budějovice, which we still consider ideal even for a day trip.

Don’t be mistaken! Not all Almsees are the same. When talking about a lake with this name, it usually refers to our favorite lake near Grünau im Almtal, which you can read about in our report here:
From České Budějovice, the best way to get to Filzmoos is via the A7 motorway. The route takes you through Linz to Filzmoos – but you can choose from several routes. Along the way, you can admire other beautiful Austrian landscapes.
From the center of Filzmoos, navigation will lead you to a panoramic toll road (5.50 EUR/car, 3 EUR/motorcycle – in 2024), leading to the parking lot at Oberhofalmen, near the picturesque mountain lake Almsee.

Almsee Lake lies in the heart of the Filzmoos area and offers ideal conditions for picnics or just relaxing by the shore. Close to the lake, you’ll also find the Maria am Steineggl chapel, which completes this Austrian landscape fairy tale perfectly.
This picturesque 18th-century building stands on a rocky outcrop and offers unforgettable views of the surrounding landscape. Traditional weddings are often held here.

Filzmoos – Amlsee – during dry summers, the lake’s water level decreases / the most water is in the lake during late spring
Please keep in mind that you are in a natural landscape area. The lake and the surrounding nature can look different in each season, and that’s completely natural. In spring, when the snow melts from the mountain peaks, the lake is full of water.
On the other hand, if you visit at the end of summer, in August, Almsee will be almost drained. Anyway, no matter what time of year you plan your trip here, the nature around Filzmoos is truly breathtaking.

Almsee Filzmoos
We consider it ideal to head to the lake on sunny mornings when the peaks of the mountains are reflected in Almsee Filzmoos. Some might mistake the reflecting Grosse Bischofsmütze (2458 m) for Dachstein. However, for that, you should head to the other side, to the Gosauseen lakes, which you can read about in our report here:
Filzmoos is a picturesque mountain village known for its friendly residents and excellent cuisine. In local restaurants, you can enjoy traditional Austrian specialties like Wiener Schnitzel, Kaiserschmarrn, or Apfelstrudel.
We highly recommend stopping at OBERHOFALM, where you’ll have the chance to taste the best traditional Austrian dishes in an authentic mountain setting. You can find the official Oberhofalm website here: www.oberhofalm.at
