Tauplitzalm is a well-known ski resort in Austria for many Czech tourists, located just under a three-hour drive from the South Bohemian border. However, fewer people know that just as it has much to offer in winter, it can also amaze you with its natural beauty from spring to autumn. In Central Europe, Tauplitzalm, at an altitude of 1650 meters, is the largest plateau and offers plenty of activities not only for climbers but especially for every nature lover.

Vacation in Tauplitz
Besides panoramic views and fresh mountain air, a summer vacation in Tauplitz will entice you with its greatest treasure: a walk around 6 lakes. The advantage of this trip is undoubtedly that everyone can choose a route according to their abilities and skills.
Of course, it’s good not to overestimate yourself, and it would be a shame for healthy hikers to underestimate themselves and shorten the route by a lake or two. You can reach Lake Steirersee by road even with a stroller or wheelchair. However, expect a slight elevation. If you want to ensure you reach all the lakes, we recommend taking a carrier/sling for children.

All along the paths, you’ll enjoy alpine meadows blooming with purple alpine roses from spring. You can also admire the velvety blue gentian, carnations, and other mountain flowers. Conversely, if your vacation in Tauplitz is in autumn, you’ll be moved by the larches shimmering with a gentle golden hue on the mountain slopes.

In winter, you may not enjoy a walk around green meadows with swimming in the lakes, but you can look forward to 42 kilometers of perfectly groomed slopes. But now, let’s embark on today’s trip, which will take you to an alpine paradise, where we’ll guide you around 6 lakes on Tauplitzalm. Those of you who don’t like to bring snacks on a trip can look forward to traditional inns, of which you’ll encounter several along the way.
A vacation in Tauplitz and walks around Tauplitzalm are also suitable for well-behaved dogs on a leash.

Transport and Parking on Tauplitzalm
How you choose to travel to Tauplitzalm is entirely up to you. It will also depend on where you choose accommodation in Tauplitz. If you stay in the town below the cable car, the best way to set off on a trip is by using the 4-seater cable car. If you want to start the route around the 6 lakes traditionally, head left after exiting the cable car, towards the parking lot, from where you’ll follow the map and signs. The paths are well-marked here, so you don’t have to worry about getting lost.

The second option is to choose accommodation in Tauplitz directly among the lakes. This way, you’ll have all the trails just a few steps from the hotel. You can choose between larger hotels or cozy traditional mountain-style cottages.

Lastly, you can drive to Tauplitzalm via a high mountain toll road, which will take you comfortably to the parking lot, where the trails around the lakes begin. Whether you drive on the scenic road or take the cable car from the town of Tauplitz, don’t forget to pick up a map of the trips on Tauplitzalm at the ticket office (or at the information center).
All the lakes are clearly described and illustrated with descriptions of the trips, and although you’ll be prepared from our article today, the map will make your trip even easier on the spot.
Accommodation Directly on Tauplitzalm
If you stay directly on Tauplitzalm, it will undoubtedly be an experience in itself. The sunrises and sunsets here are absolutely breathtaking. You can choose from hotels or private apartments/cottages, both in summer and winter.
6 Lakes on Tauplitzalm
If you discovered the tip for a trip around the 6 lakes on Tauplitzalm only today, believe that it will be one of the most beautiful lake trips in Austria for you (not only) in nice summer weather. For a complete trip, reserve about 5 hours. If you choose additional detours along the way, for example to Leistalm, add an extra hour.
Also, add the time you’ll spend in mountain inns and swimming in one of the lakes. Personally, we were tempted to swim in Lake Steirersee in the afternoon.
1. Krallersee
From the parking lot, head slightly uphill to the west following the sign. The first lake you’ll encounter on your trip today is called Krallersee, and it’s one of the smaller ones on Tauplitzalm. Along the way, you’ll notice two hotels where you can arrange accommodation. The first is Hotel Hollhaus and the second is Hotel Haus Alpin, popular especially among Czechs.
From the hill near the hotel, you’ll be captivated by the view of the darkly shimmering lake at the foot of Mount Lawinstein. On calm days, you can observe dragonflies here and even hear frogs singing. Some people shorten the route and don’t walk around the lake, but that would be a shame. On this walk, you’ll enjoy views of the lake from all sides.

2. Grosssee
The next lake on our journey is Grosssee. Among the 6 lakes on Tauplitzalm, this is one of the most popular even for shorter trips. Many hikers stop here to enjoy the 360-degree view over the mountains, lake, and green meadows, which become snow-covered slopes in winter. Before heading left slightly downhill, you can take a short hike to the summit, where you’ll be offered a breathtaking view of the local landscape.

On the way downhill to the lake’s shores, be careful where you step. In the hot summer days, vipers may bask here. This path would be difficult with a stroller. To not miss out on the following views, we recommend taking a carrier or sling for this trip. At this lake, you’ll also encounter flocks of ducks, and for your contemplation, you’ll find several benches here.
3. Märchensee
If you were to rush from Lake Grosssee, you would certainly miss one of the most picturesque lakes on Taplitzalm. You can reach Märchensee in a few minutes if you take the marked turn, which is really easy to miss, so pay attention on the way. Since many tourists actually miss the turn, it’s very likely that outside the main season, you’ll enjoy it all to yourself.

4. Tauplitzsee
Tauplitzsee is another marshy lake that awaits you on your trip to the 6 lakes on Tauplitzalm. The lake doesn’t particularly captivate us, and I believe it will be just another point you pass by. However, from distant views, it adds a fairytale character to the local nature, along with traditional wooden cottages where you can book your stay.

5. Steirersee
The second most popular lake on Tauplitzalm is the emerald Steirersee. Thanks to the asphalt road leading to the mountain inns, from where there is a breathtaking view of this fairytale lake, families with strollers or tourists in wheelchairs can also reach it. However, expect a slight descent and subsequent ascent back uphill.
The view of Steirersee is beautiful from almost all sides. If you head to the last lake in the afternoon, we recommend taking the path along the left bank of Steirersee and returning along the right. This way, you’ll enjoy beautiful views and have the sun on the right side.

6. Schwarzensee
Once you leave Lake Steirersee, only the last lake stop awaits you, named Schwarzensee. We recommend quality trekking shoes for the journey. Sometimes you descend over rocks, and walking over roots is also not uncommon. At Schwarzensee, you can head to another mountain hut advertised before reaching the lake. Personally, we favored the inns with views of Steirersee, so we’ll leave it up to you whether you complete the trip to the end of Tauplitzalm.

We are already heading back along the right bank of Lake Steirersee to catch a swim in the warm afternoon sun. We are the only tourists on the lake’s shore, enjoying panoramic views of the mighty Grimming and the legendary Sturzhahn in a serene atmosphere. On the way back, it’s already getting dark, and it’s the perfect time to visit one of the local restaurants for a well-deserved treat.
