Our tip: If you want to be as close to the lake and swimming as possible, choose Seehotel St. Hubertus or Familienresort Buchau, which lie right by the water and have their own beach. Pertisau is ideal for a combination of the lake and trips to the Karwendel mountains, while Maurach offers easy access to the Rofanseilbahn cable car and the southern shore of Achensee.

Where to go for trips from accommodation at Achensee: 5 of our verified tips
1. Gaisalm and the trail along the western shore
One of the most beautiful trips we take from our accommodation at Achensee is the journey to the Gaisalm mountain hut, which is accessible only by foot or boat. You can set off from Achenkirch or Pertisau and return comfortably by boat. Keep in mind that the Mariensteig trail leads through narrow rocky sections in places, so it requires sturdy footwear, a steady foot, and a head for heights, and we classify it as moderately difficult.
2. Rofan and the Adlerhorst viewpoint
The Rofan Seilbahn cable car will take you from Maurach to an altitude of 1,840 meters in a few minutes, from where hiking trails lead to mountain huts and surrounding peaks. The Adlerhorst viewing platform on the Gschöllkopf peak at 2,039 meters is particularly worth a visit; it resembles a giant eagle’s nest and offers a circular view of Achensee, Karwendel, and the Zillertal Alps.

3. Dalfazer Waterfall and Dalfaz Alm
The approximately 60-meter-high Dalfazer Waterfall is the largest waterfall in the area that you can visit from your accommodation at Achensee, and it’s most impressive in spring and early summer when it’s fed by melting snow. From Buchau, you can walk just to the viewpoint below the waterfall, or continue up to the Dalfaz Alm hut. The entire moderately difficult loop measures approximately 9 kilometers and took us around four hours.

Trip Tips at Achensee
4. Zwölferkopf above Pertisau
The Karwendel-Bergbahn departs directly from Pertisau and takes you to Zwölferkopf at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters, from where one of the most beautiful views of the entire Achensee opens up. Around the upper station, you can walk to the Bärenbadalm mountain hut, while more experienced hikers can continue to the 1,991-meter-high Bärenkopf, whose final section is secured with cables in places – we personally didn’t do this difficult part and recommend it only to the experienced.
5. Achenseebahn Steam Railway and Lake Cruise
The historic Achenseebahn cog railway has been running from Jenbach to Achensee since 1889 and covers an elevation gain of approximately 440 meters over less than seven kilometers. We recommend combining the trip with a cruise from the Seespitz stop, as the train and boat schedules connect, allowing you to enjoy the lake from both land and water in one day.
