Altaussee is a picturesque Alpine village located in the Ausseerland–Salzkammergut region at the foot of the Totes Gebirge massif in the Northern Limestone Alps, in Styria. The surrounding landscape consists of our favorite Lake Altausseer See, as well as forests and mountains, which are covered in snow in winter, creating a scenery typical of a quiet winter vacation in Austria.

What to do near Altaussee in winter?

1. Circuit around Altausseer See

Lake Altausseer See is one of the most picturesque in the Salzkammergut region. In addition to the typical summer circuit, which we also recommend on our Austrian lakes, it also offers an approximately 7 km panoramic trail in winter, which is mostly well-maintained and easy. The route is also ideal for morning or afternoon walks, when the sun over the lake creates dramatic contrasts between the mountains.

The landscape around Lake Altaussee is calm in winter, and most of the trail is free of motor vehicle traffic. In strong frosts, the surface may be partially frozen, creating a natural “ice rink” (always make sure that entering the ice is safe and do not take unnecessary risks!).

2. Loser Ski Resort

The Loser ski resort is one of the most popular excursions if you stay near Altaussee in winter. The ski area is the main winter sports facility in this area and offers approximately 33 kilometers of slopes that are clear, wide and very well maintained. The terrain is particularly suitable for recreational skiers, families with children and intermediate skiers.

  • The resort is open during the winter season from November 29, 2025 – April 6, 2026, usually daily from 09:00 to 16:00 (with the exception of the first days in December, when it opens depending on conditions).
  • A new modern “Loser Panoramabahn” chairlift awaits you
  • Skiing takes place at an altitude of approximately 850 – 1,800 m above sea level
  • A ski pass for an adult costs around EUR 59/day (indicative price – depends on age and number of days purchased)

A great advantage is the open character of the slopes above the forest line, thanks to which you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Even in the high season, there is a calmer atmosphere here than in the more famous Alpine resorts. The Loser ski resort is our secret tip for where to go skiing and not get stuck in the lift queue.

We also recommend the hike to the top of Loser, which leads around Lake Augstsee and Loserfenster, as a summer tip for a trip:

3. Cross-country ski trails – Altaussee in winter

For cross-country skiing, there is a network of trails in the region leading through the valley landscape and around recreational locations. According to official reports, the trails leading to Blaa Alm are about 7 km long and regularly maintained for both classic and skating styles. The routes are suitable for both beginners and advanced skiers and are groomed throughout the winter, depending on current snow conditions.

4. Tauplitzalm Ski and Cross-Country Ski Resort

If the cross-country ski trails in the valley are not enough for you, or there is not enough snow, head to the fairytale resort of Tauplitzalm, which is approximately 30 minutes by car from Altaussee. You will pay approximately EUR 20 for a pass for the cross-country ski trails in the resort and enjoy perfectly groomed trails in the high-altitude resort.

5. Visit neighboring Lake Grundlsee in winter

The circuit around Lake Grundlsee is relatively easy to walk even in winter, and in stable weather it is one of the most beautiful easy routes in Ausseerland, with views of the Totes Gebirge massif and snowy shores. If there is snow, it is recommended to skip the path through the forest and only take the route on the left side (there and back), which is usually groomed.

Thanks to the distance of approximately 10 km from Altaussee, Grundlsee is an ideal destination for a pleasant day trip, which can be easily combined with lunch in one of the local inns.

6. Enjoy a day at the wellness center

To spice up your stay near Altaussee in winter, you can easily take day wellness trips to the surrounding area. The closest is the aforementioned spa Narzissen Bad Aussee, which will surprise you with its modern thermal and sauna world. These spas are approximately 5 km away (approximately 10 minutes’ drive).

  • It offers indoor and outdoor pools with mountain views, an extensive sauna area and a relaxation area, which is well used even in the winter months.

The second option is Grimming Therme in Bad Mitterndorf, approximately 20 km from Altaussee. The thermal baths are known primarily for their large outdoor pool with a view of the Grimming massif and a high-quality sauna world.

If you prefer a larger spa complex, Eurothermen Resort Bad Ischl, which is located approximately 35 km from Altaussee and combines thermal pools, a large sauna area and the urban spa tradition of Bad Ischl, is also worth considering.

All three places are easily accessible from Altaussee by car and can easily be managed as a relaxing half-day or full-day trip. We personally like to combine two days on the slopes and a day in wellness, if we go here for an ideal 5 nights.
