Lake Körbersee sits at an altitude of 1,654 meters and is surrounded by imposing mountains and dense forests. This area is part of the Hochtannberg Nature Park and is easily accessible on foot and by cable car, with several possible trails of varying difficulty. The lake boasts clean and calm water that reflects the surrounding natural scenery, creating breathtaking views.

Here you can let yourself be carried away by the breathtaking view of the gently sloping meadow that frames the gravel path with fresh greenery, where alpine cows peacefully graze during the summer season. On the opposite side, Juppenspitze rises majestically to the sky with its 2,412 meters, and its striking contours and rocky sides are reflected in the crystal-clear water. We remember when we first saw a photograph from this lake, we couldn’t believe that such a place actually exists in Austria. In fact, it’s thanks to these breathtaking natural sceneries that we call Vorarlberg “little Switzerland”.

In 2017, Lake Körbersee entered the consciousness of the general public when it won the prestigious competition “Most Beautiful Place in Austria”. This competition, organized by Austrian television station ORF, annually highlights the country’s most captivating natural sceneries. Körbersee impressed voters not only with its clean and crystal-clear water, but also with its picturesque surroundings, which include majestic mountains and vast meadows full of flowers. This award not only confirmed the uniqueness of Lake Körbersee, but also increased interest from tourists and nature lovers who come here to experience this unique location with their own eyes.

Trip to Lake Körbersee

The path to Lake Körbersee, which starts at the parking lot and leads past Lake Kalbelesee, is one of the most picturesque routes in the Vorarlberg region. This route is ideal for tourist vacationers who want to experience the splendor of two mountain lakes in one comfortable trip.

Although it’s possible to set out to Lake Körbersee directly from the village of Schröcken, we’ll approach today’s tip more as a relaxing family walk that even the less physically fit can manage, and even fit moms and dads with sports strollers can embark on it.

We start at the parking lot between the towns of Schröcken and Warth, where you can park for a symbolic fee, or you can arrive here by local tourist bus, which you’ll have free when staying in Schröcken for at least 3 nights.

Always inquire about the tourist card and conditions for its issuance. You can often save quite a bit of money from your vacation budget this way. Our today’s route indicates 40 minutes to Lake Körbersee. However, since we’ll be stopping along the way and admiring the breathtaking views, we automatically count on a longer time.

Route Description to Körbersee

Starting Point: Hochtannbergpass Parking Lot

The path begins at the Hochtannbergpass parking lot, which is located on the main road between the villages of Warth and Schröcken. After parking your vehicle, head toward Lake Kalbelesee, which is just a few minutes’ walk away.

To Lake Kalbelesee

Lake Kalbelesee sits at an altitude of 1,600 meters and is easily accessible from the parking lot. The path to it is well-marked and gently descends, allowing for a comfortable and undemanding walk. The surroundings of Lake Kalbelesee offer beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and are an ideal place for a short stop where you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and take some photographs.

From Lake Kalbelesee to Lake Körbersee

After exploring Lake Kalbelesee, continue along the hiking trail that leads around the lake toward the south. The trail turns here and climbs gently, winding between mountain meadows and forest stands. After about 20 minutes of walking, you’ll reach a crossroads where you’ll follow the signs toward Lake Körbersee.

Crossing the Mountain Ridge

The path now continues over a gentle mountain ridge, from where beautiful views of the surrounding landscape open up to you. The route here isn’t too demanding, but you need to be careful on rocky sections and possible wet parts of the trail, especially after rain. After crossing the ridge, the trail begins to descend gently toward Lake Körbersee. This was the section where parents with strollers can catch their breath after the challenging climb. We met a young family here in September with a double stroller for twins. So yes, even with twins, the trail to Körbersee is possible if you’re fit.

Final Section to Lake Körbersee

The last part of the journey takes you into a picturesque valley where Lake Körbersee is located. This part of the route is particularly beautiful thanks to the dense forests and blooming mountain meadows that line it. After approximately 30 minutes of walking from Lake Kalbelesee, you’ll reach Lake Körbersee itself.

We naturally stop and admire every step, so we significantly extend these official times. The crystal-clear water of the lake and surrounding natural scenery will provide you with well-deserved rest and unforgettable views. Unless otherwise stated, swimming in the lake is permitted.

Total Time and Route Length

Overall, the journey from Hochtannbergpass parking lot around Lake Kalbelesee to Lake Körbersee takes approximately 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on your pace and stops. The route is suitable for most hikers, including families with children, thanks to its relatively mild difficulty and well-marked trails.
